Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na is a 2008 Hindi-language film written and directed by Abbas Tyrewala. The film stars Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza in pivotal roles. Produced by Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan, it marks the debut of Imran Khan (Aamir Khan's nephew) as an actor, and Abbas Tyrewala as a director, and re-appearance of Genelia in Bollywood. Released on July 4, 2008, the film has received favorable reviews, going on to enjoy quite a successful run at the box office.[2]
Plot
A group of friends including Rotlu, Jiggy, Bombs, Shaleen, and a recent addition, Mala, arrive at the airport and find out the flight they are waiting for will arrive an hour late. In the mean time, the group offers to tell Mala a love story between the friends that are arriving, Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D'souza). Jai Singh Rathore ("Rats")has been raised by his mother to be gentle and non-violent. Aditi ("Meow")is just the opposite; her emotions are often in the extremes. Surprisingly, these two are inseparable friends who are so close to each other that most people, including the group of friends and parents mistake their friendship for love. However, Aditi and Jai both are looking for different qualities in their future spouses--Aditi wants someone who, unlike Jai, would be able to fight to protect Aditi; and Jai wants someone who, unlike Aditi, is a calm-minded girl.
The friends decide one day that since they both know each other so well, Aditi and Jai should find a match for each other. The plan is put into affect and soon enough, Jai finds his first love, Meghana, a girl he cleverly saves from a couple of misbehaving cowboys at a club. As Jai spends more and more time with his new-found girlfriend, Aditi quickly feels the burn of losing Jai's friendship. She is irritated with Jai and Jai is not able to understand why his best friend is behaving oddly.
Suddenly, Aditi herself becomes engaged to her father's friend's son, Sushant, who at first appearance, seems to be just what she's looking for: he's romantic and "a stud". However, Aditi soon realizes after several dates with Sushant, that the qualities she had been looking for and what are present in Sushant are not at all what she's expected. Along with extreme temper, Sushant also seems to have a lengthy girlfriend background and abusive behavior.
At the same time, Jai looses interest in Meghana when he finds out that she is not in touch with reality. At first her "What's this?" game, where Meghana gives imaginative descriptions for ordinary sights, seems fun. But later, when Jai notices that Meghana seems oblivious to her parent's rocky relationship, he is convinced that she might have deeper problems.
During Jiggy's birthday party, Jai and Aditi are more distant than ever, even when they are with their respective lovers who they just don't seem interested in. Jai is shocked when Sushant kisses Aditi during the party, and in the confusion, he lets his anger out on Meghana. In the process, he reveals that she doesn't seem to be in touch with reality. Meghana responds that she had always known her parents are not in love, but cannot accept it yet. The next day, Jai reveals to Meghana that he is in love with Aditi, which Meghana understands as she had noticed the hidden feelings between them.
Meghana runs into Aditi and Sushant at a restaurant, where Aditi had just told Sushant about her plans to pursue a degree in theater at New York University before marriage. Meghana reveals that she had broken up with Jai because he is in love with his best friend. Sushant is angered and demands Aditi to tell him if she has feelings for Jai. When she finally admits that she might be in love, Sushant hits her across her face and leaves.
Jai, now single again, finds Aditi alone the next day. She tells him she has scheduled a flight to the U.S.A and Jai guesses she will not return for three years. When Jai tries to reason with her, Aditi insists that the vacation will be good for her. Jai notices the bruise on her face and demands to know if Sushant was the cause. Aditi doesn't reveal but Jai nevertheless goes to Sushant's home and for the first time, gets in a fight. Jai knocks Sushant unconscious and comes home. His mother is angry that he used violence but is happy when Jai finally reveals to his mother that he's in love with Aditi. Just as Jai leaves to stop Aditi from boarding her flight, he is arrested for having beaten Sushant.
Jai begins to lose hope as he sits behind bars, but just then, the two cowboys that had harassed Meghana also enter the jail cell. It is then revealed that Jai is actually a rajput (Rajasthan prince), his father was a warrior (rather than a non-violent person as claimed by his mother), that the cowboys are related to Jai, and that all rajputs will become men from boys when they fulfill three requirements: 1) beaten someone 2) gone to jail and 3) have rode a horse. The cowboys, revealing their royalty, get Jai out of jail but unfortunately, there has been a transportation strike. Jai then rides the one of the cowboys' horses to the airport, fulfilling the three requirements that make him a man in the rajput sense.
He dashes past security at the airport, causing the security police to chase him down. He is pinned down by the police just as he finds Aditi at her airport terminal. He expresses his love for her and begs her to stay with him. Aditi is overjoyed.
The story comes back from the flashback as the flight has finally landed and Aditi and Jai arrive from their honeymoon. Mala is ecstatic to see the couple, who she feels she has known for a long time. The movie ends happily, with the group of friends joking around and laughing.
